Although nothing is said in the Bible about the end of Mary’s life, artists have continued to explore the theme throughout time. In most artistic depictions, the Virgin Mary is shown with the twelve Apostles around her at the time of her death, and in the etching The Death of the Virgin, Rembrandt has followed suit. The tradition of the Apostles being shown at Mary’s death dates to the 5th century where most often the twelve comfort Mary in her last moments on earth. Major museums continue to seek out The Death of the Virgin, and competition to own this large etching is strong among Rembrandt collectors and aficionados.
