Albrecht Dürer
The Virgin Queen of the Angels
In this rich and complicated woodcut, The Virgin Queen of the Angels, Albrecht Dürer pays homage to the Virgin Mary. As Mary dutifully fulfills her sacred role as Christ’s mother, she is surrounded by angels. There are lesser angels in heaven looking down and praising Mary. The cherubs surround her at her feet and gleefully play music while offering wine and fruit. More important angels sit to her right with adoration. Above her, a pair of majestically winged angels crown her Mary, Queen of the Angels and Heaven. This intricate woodcut is a joyous celebration of Mary’s important life and contribution to God’s divine plan, one of Dürer’s most powerful and touching scenes.
