In the 1970s, Dalí made a concerted effort to study the Old Testament or Torah so he could render some of the key figures and events from this early Biblical text. Dalí has chosen to depict the 1st King of Israel, King Saul, with wildly unfocused eyes, staring off in bewilderment and fear. In doing so, Dalí has demonstrated his knowledge of Bible text.
