Rembrandt van Rijn’s classic etching Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple depicts an important moment described by all four of the Bible’s Evangelists. For in this scene, Jesus has come to the Temple of Jerusalem and now stands in the Temple’s courtyard. He watches the money changers exchange the Roman currency for Jewish money. Providing this service to an eager and captive audience of religious pilgrims, the money changers selfishly profit by charging high fees. Outraged by their usury, Jesus decides to stop the blasphemy by disrupting the entire market.
