In the mid 1970s, Salvador Dali turned his attention to the mysterious and ancient tarot cards. His interest culminated in the Tarot Universal Dali, a fully functioning tarot deck. When creating the cards, Dali mixed the centuries old tarot imagery with symbols from art history, his own dreams and fears, and modern psychology. The broad and complex range of themes evoked in Dali’s fascinating Tarot cards led to a tremendously popular and intimately related series of original graphics.
One of these special graphics, the imagery in this original lithograph is closely linked to Dali’s design for the Three of Swords. The Three of Swords is the archetypal tarot card for emotional pain and suffering, however, Dali transformed it into a positive message about the power of love. As the scholar Annette Koger-Kaufmann wrote about Dali’s card, “The heart reigns supreme. Whatever problems you might encounter, you will be able to solve or minimize them with the weapons of the mind and the eyes of love.” A powerful and uplifting message, Dali captured the power of love of triumph over all pain and adversity.
