Tree Clock is a superb example of Dali’s ground breaking theories of hardness and softness which he developed in the 1930s. As the story goes, one sunny day Dali was eating a sandwich made with Camembert cheese, when a drop of it melted and fell onto his wristwatch. He was instantly struck by the softness of the cheese contrasted against the hardness of the landscape. Haunted by this vision for the rest of his life, four decades later, Dali reinvigorated his now classic ideas in this lithograph – Tree Clock.
