The Raising of Lazarus

The Raising of Lazarus was Rembrandt’s first monumental etching, which he probably completed around 1632. Here, Rembrandt captures the biblical passage when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in one of his divine miracles. As historians have often noted, Rembrandt’s mastery of light gives this etching its power and drama. K. G. Boon praised this work saying that, “Light streams with a nebulous glow into the grotto-like space, as if it manifested God’s presence therein… he was able to maintain the evocative power of light.”
